Deborah and I begin a new sermon series starting Sunday that will take us with Christ through Lent and to the cross. It’s appropriately called “Cross/Walk”.

Cross/Walk

There is a song that I have been really excited about that we are debuting in the  Table service this Sunday. It will be our theme song during Lent. You might have heard it before. The words point directly at what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. Here is the first verse:

“Will you come and follow me

If I but call your name?

Will you go where you don’t know

And never be the same?

Will you let my love be shown,

Will you let my name be known,

Will you let my life be grownIn you and you in me?”

~ From the Summons by John Bell ~

Lent is a season of discipleship. It reminds us of the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness, a scripture we will hear this Sunday in more detail. During that time in the desert, Jesus was tested by every   temptation the world and evil could throw at him. In the same way, we walk through Lent because it reminds us of our “humanness”. We are reminded that following Jesus does not mean giving up the world and living only on spiritual things. Discipleship means confronting and overcoming the temptations and brokenness around us.

Deborah and I begin a new sermon series starting Sunday that will take us with Christ through Lent and to the cross. It’s appropriately called “Cross/Walk”. After spending a few Sundays in January talking about our tendency to run from God, we are being invited to respond to his call and follow him. Our journey may lead in to   unfamiliar or challenging territory, but it is my prayer that we will each experience Christ growing in us, not the things of the world, as the song suggests.

If you have not checked our newest worship service, the Table at 9:30 AM in Alexander’s Stage, we invite you to come down and see what God is up to. The Table will be using the same themes through the season of Lent but will feature a different and more informal message.

May God bless us on our journeys together, with Christ, toward Easter!
