Rolling Out the Red Carpet

Are you excited about welcoming Rev. Dr. Sharon Watkins, the General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), to our pulpit on Sunday? 

I sure am. I know East Dallas Christian Church has welcomed many in its pulpit over the years, including every General Minister and President in Disciples’ history. In a way, we should already be ready. But if you need a little help to prepare Sunday morning, here are the top ten things you can do to make this a Sunday to remember (with a sense of humor). 

10. Set your alarm clock. (I will not name names, but I know some of our Sunday School classes like to mosey on in to church a little later than others.) 

9. Gargle with salt water before you come to church, so your melodious voice will ring out loud and clear. (Let’s praise God loudly on Sunday!) 

8. Volunteer as an extra usher or greeter to welcome guests and members Sunday with your best smile. (You can contact Mike Voigt, our Chair of Deacons, if you are interested.) 

7. Wear something that speaks to the pride you have for your church and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). (I suppose TCU colors would be acceptable too.) 

6. Park in one of our side parking lots if you can to make room for guests. (If we need to provide a shuttle to and from your car, call the church office.) 

5. Join your church family at 10 AM in the Great Hall for a special welcoming reception for Sharon Watkins before the 10:50 service. (Yes, there will be food.)

 4. Shake twice as many hands during our greeting time during announcements. (Shaking your own hand or your spouse’s hand does not count.) 

3. Pray for Dr. Watkins and our denomination. (Lift up to God all of the good work that our denomination is doing in cities and communities around the world.) 

2. Bring a friend to church with you. (Tell them someone important is going to be there… other than Jesus.) 

1. Open your heart to receive a good word from God through Dr. Watkins. As we gather at Christ’s table this Sunday, let us know that we are blessed in this time and place to be transformed by the good news that we share in.
