East Dallas Christian Church - a long history of leadership in the Dallas community
Our Church traces its beginnings back to 1903, when a group of interested Disciples of Christ met to consider the establishment of a new church in East Dallas. On November 15, 1903, under the leadership of John A. Stevens, East Dallas Christian Church was organized and a new frame church was dedicated on site at Victor and Peak Streets. Four years later, the frame building was moved to Junius and Peak Streets where the Church stands today.
Over the course of more than 100 years, the Church has occupied three buildings; the frame tabernacle, a brick building dedicated in 1912, and the present Sanctuary dedicated in 1925, along with our five-story educational building. The Sanctuary is characterized by beautiful dark woods, expertly carved in the tradition of fine craftsmanship rarely seen today. The stained glass windows are inspiring as light fills their panes during services. This architectural treasure is an extraordinary environment in which you can find peace, spirituality and a real sense of community as you worship. Our congregation is led by Senior Minister Deborah Morgan, a fifth generation member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She follows in the footsteps of beloved pastors who served long tenures at East Dallas Christian Church, including Dr. John G. Slayter, Dr. L.N.D. Wells and Dr. W. A. Welsh. While our church has a proud 100-year tradition in Dallas, we are even more excited about the wonderful programs offered now and what will be possible in the next 100 years.
